Japan eSIM for 7 or 14 days: data needs and plan checks
Published 2 October 2026 · Provider sources checked 2 October 2026
Trip length alone does not tell you which package to buy. Combine duration, phone usage and sharing needs.
Build a budget before comparing prices
Use this formula: trip days × (phone GB per day + shared GB per day). The table is an arithmetic example using chosen assumptions, not a claim about typical travelers. Add your own buffer for uncertain usage.
| Daily assumption | 7-day budget | 14-day budget |
|---|---|---|
| 0.25 GB phone; no sharing | 1.75 GB | 3.5 GB |
| 0.5 GB phone; no sharing | 3.5 GB | 7 GB |
| 0.5 GB phone + 0.25 GB sharing | 5.25 GB | 10.5 GB |
| 0.5 GB phone + 1 GB sharing | 10.5 GB | 21 GB |
At the same daily usage, two weeks needs twice the data. A plan suitable for the 5.25 GB example may fail the 10.5 GB example. Wi-Fi use can change what you consume on mobile; count only the usage you expect to put through the eSIM.
Compare current offers against that budget
| Provider | Published detail checked | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Ubigi | 10 GB / 30 days; US$16.50 snapshot | Does the combined estimate fit 10 GB? |
| Airalo | Choose a current Japan package | Check price, allowance, validity and sharing terms together. |
| Holafly | Unlimited phone offer; 1 GB/day sharing | Does each laptop day fit the sharing cap? |
We have not established a cheapest provider across all trip profiles. The Ubigi figure is a published snapshot, not a live checkout quote. Verify the selected currency, taxes, package availability and restrictions before paying.
For a seven-day trip
Choose a package that covers both the estimated quantity and your actual arrival-to-departure window. If you need a laptop, compare its busiest day with any daily sharing ceiling. A lower total estimate does not cancel a daily restriction.
For a fourteen-day trip
Recalculate rather than reusing a one-week recommendation. Check the ability and cost to top up, and save instructions for checking your balance. A 30-day validity period can cover a two-week trip, but it does not make a 10 GB allowance larger.
Before buying
Confirm device compatibility and carrier unlock status, the package’s activation rule, tethering support and whether you need ordinary calls or SMS. Do not assume a data package provides a Japanese phone number. Use the comparison planner to change the assumptions for your trip.
